Everyone goes through phases of unhealthy cravings and temptations. The good news is that there are tools and principles you can apply in your life to help you overcome them! I have been reflecting on past interviews with Jessica Golding and Noah Rasheta to help me personally.
If you’re new to the show, go back and listen to Episodes 53 with Jessica Golding and Episode 44 with Noah Rasheta to understand some of today’s references. We’ll be here when you get back.
A useful app that I currently use is Eat Right Now by Judson Brewer’s company. I chose to use the paid version and highly recommend it. It provides great mindfulness training that can help in many areas of your life, not just nutrition.
I have been frequenting the gym despite a variety of injuries I have recently incurred. Time working out has been difficult due to my injured wrist and a level 3 ankle sprain. Regardless, I was able to do several muscle ups which I did not think was possible for me. I can credit this to a higher level of concentration and mindfulness.
It all starts with mindfulness, but that word is often misunderstood. Many of us picture a Zen master sitting and meditating for long periods of time in silence. But the truth is, although peaceful meditation helps, it is not required to practice mindfulness. It can and should be something you do all throughout the day.
Half the time if we are not controlling our thoughts we are thinking about past mistakes or future worries.
Noah Rasheta’s podcast on Secular Buddhism is one of the best resources I have found on the topic. I recommend listening for yourself – it is free and easy!
The Eat Right Now app helps you recognize feelings of hunger, cravings, deciding whats real. It doesn’t take very long at all but I have found that a simple daily exercise drastically changes how I think about my health and wellness.
The RAIN Method
Recognize– “I have a craving”
Accept– Don’t try to dismiss it right away. “This is a normal human temptation”
Investigate– Be curious and really think about what your experiencing. Ask, “Am I really hungry?”
Note– Note what the outcome was.
