Have you hefted a 5 pound weight lately? It’s kind of hefty. You wouldn’t want to throw it in your purse or backpack and lug it around all day.
If you went for a run or a bike ride with it strapped to your back, you would be thrilled to rip it off and chuck it in the weeds somewhere along the way.
The challenge sometimes for dieters is that they don’t appreciate or respect losing a tiny amount, like 5 pounds. But is it so tiny? I don’t think so. It makes a difference. Every 5 pounds you can drop makes a difference.But if somebody has 40 pounds to lose, sometimes they don’t, because they aren’t willing to start with “just 5.”
So in our Formula 7 course, we advise to not set a goal of more than 5 pounds. And not because it’s a game or a trick, but because it’s REAL. Losing 5 pounds is do-able! It’s believable, it doesn’t take years, and it really does make a difference.
So, if weight loss is a goal you have, forget about the long term goal, and set a serious goal just to lose 5 pounds!
Unfortunately, a lot of people who have 40 pounds to lose, never lose 40, because they never think about losing 5. In our book Formula7, we just want you to think about 5. That’s it. Don’t worry about the 40, or how many pounds that you want to lose, just focus on 5.
It’s not a mental game. It really does matter to lose 5 pounds. It’s a significant achievement.
The great thing about 5 pounds is, it’s easy. You’ve probably done it before. I’ve done it before. It’s not very hard to lose 5 pounds. It’s a lot easier to think about losing 5 pounds than losing more than 5 pounds.
So if you commit to a 5 pound weight loss challenge you have confidence. You know you can do it. And it matters.
It’s also significant because you hit a goal. A goal that matters and makes a difference. And once you’ve hit that goal, it’s very easy to set another goal to lose 5 pounds.
Another great thing about losing five pounds is you don’t have to turn your life upside down or do anything drastic to do it. For example, if all you did was follow the first three principles of Formula 7 you would probably do it in just a few weeks. Here’s the three principles:
1. Hydrate. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day, and stop drinking calories.
2. Eat slowly and mindfully
3. Only eat until 80% full.
