Irene Lyon, MSC., teaches people around the world how to work with the nervous system to transform trauma, heal body and mind, and live full, creative lives, helping thousands of people in over 60 countries.
Irene has a Master’s Degree in Biomedical and Health Science and also has a knack for making complex info easy for ALL of us to understand and apply to our lives.
Nervous System
There are many nervous systems. The two main ones are the central nervous system such as the brain, and the spinal cord. Then there’s the peripheral nervous system that allows us to move our body and also allows us to have survival mechanisms come in when we need to protect.
The nervous system is a big category for automatic stuff, voluntary stuff like moving, and survival.
What problems do people have due to the nervous system
Oh so many. The work that I primarily do is working with folks with chronic illness, chronic anxiety, depression, OCD behaviors, gut problems, autoimmune problems, social anxiety, trouble sleeping, etc.

Is there a relationship between hormones and the nervous system?
A lot of people who have autoimmune conditions, chronic illness, chronic fatigue have where their cortisol is shot. Usually they were brought into a world that was very stressful; parents were stressed or maybe there was adversity.
We need cortisol to stay awake during the day and go to sleep at night though, often people with high levels of stress, have the opposite where they are so tired during the day and then really awake when the sun goes down. That shows that the system is dysregulated.
How the Emotion code Can be Related to the Nervous System
One thing that is really interesting is that our emotions are actually stored in our body and in our tissues.
If you’ve ever been with somebody who is very in tune with their body like a kid, they say things like “My stomach hurts, I have butterflies, my heart hurts.”
When we see the emotions in our body and primarily in the sensations, and choose to contract the sensations we can actually get under a lot of the emotions that paralyze people.
Natural medicine
There is so much natural medicine in our physiology, in our organs, and in our tissues.
We do need to do the meditation, the mind-body work, but we also have to bring the brain and the thinking into it.
Practical practices
The next time you hurt yourself. Maybe as small as burning your finger on a toaster. Pause and notice the sensations and feelings.
Be aware of these internal and biological needs when they happen. You will be surprised how often you override your physiological needs.
Becoming an Apprentice of Your Nervous System
I call them “Becoming an Apprentice of Your Nervous System”. You learn hardcore theory in a fun way and practices which include coming back to the body and working with very gentle movement.
Every joint in our body holds emotion. When we’re really connected to the body and we’re really feeling our body, we have true empathy for everything around us. You can only hurt something else if you’re disconnected from your body.
The more resilient and regulated we are at this level – this specific nervous system level, the more we can handle the world and the uncertainty and the ever changing nature that we can’t predict.
